QLD: Pollies who retire or are defeated will keep allowances
SYDNEY, Aug 21 AAP - Queensland politicians who retire or are defeated at the upcoming
state election will be allowed to keep electorate allowances that have been paid in advance.
Retiring speaker Tony McGrady has signed off on a deal allowing MPs who leave the political
scene on September 9 to keep a taxpayer-funded bonus they have not worked for, The Australian
newspaper reports today.
The money, which can total as much as $40,000, is paid half-yearly in advance.
It is meant to cover the 26-week period from July 1 to December 31, 2006.
