SYDNEY, Aug 4 AAP - Australian army reservists could reportedly be deployed in the2003 Rugby World Cup in a security program based on the British Army's urban warfare fightwith the Irish Republican Army.

The six-week global rugby showpiece, which kicks off on October 10, will be the biggestof any kind Australia has staged since the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US in2001.

The Reserve Response Force (RRF), created a month ago by the federal government followingheightened global security concerns, is being trained in capital cities across Australia.

The Daily Telegraph reported today the reservists were being told they could provideoperational support for the world's largest sporting drawcard this year at 12 venues inAustralia.

They are being trained in identifying hidden car bombs, venue search and clearance, vehicle checkpoint duties and cordon operations.

RRF members could be used for low-level risk searches or hotels or VIP routes and crowdcontrol, they were told.

Part of the training involves British Army educational videos on IRA tactics, includinghow terrorists can blend in with the public, conceal weapons and create panic and fear.

Attorney-General Daryl Williams' spokeswoman told The Courier-Mail the commonwealth,ARU, International Rugby Board and police were "already working closely together".
