The Midwest and South had the most affordable housing in America earlier this year, an industry survey shows, while housing in the Northeast was among the nation's most expensive.

Cities in California and the Northeast were at the bottom of the survey of 147 urban areas during the first quarter of 1991 compiled by the National Association of Home Builders.

The survey, released Tuesday, showed that 88.9 percent of all homes in Amarillo, Texas, were affordable to the median-income family at the prevailing mortgage rate. Amarillo had the most affordable housing in the United States.
